Deer, Moose, Wolf

Spring is hurrying along up here. It is amazing how fast the season is progressing. Red maples, poplars and willows are blooming, providing pollen for the early pollinators. The deer have migrated through, and a cow and calf moose have been hanging out in our neck of the woods. On our walk this morning, we saw where the moose had broken down young poplars to eat the buds and where they had ripped sap filled strips of bark off of red maples with their teeth.

Maple syrup season is over, garlic is up about 4 inches, and it is rapidly closing on time to get gardening.  Onion sets are going in within the next couple of days, along with some lettuce and radish seeds.

  1. Spring is definitely moving right along. I love all the photos, especially the one with the sweet deer looking right at the camera. Good luck with this year's garden. :)

    1. It sure is, Martha. I am outside most of the time as I don't want to miss a moment! Our summer migrants (birds) are showing up, species by species. The Phoebes and Song Sparrows are here. The frogs are serenading us, so nice to have critter noises after the (more or less) quiet winter!

  2. Yes, spring is definitely moving in. And it's looking to be early for us this year. We're getting much needed rain which is soaking the forest and standing dead grasses and weeds from last year and doing a good job of encouraging early weeds to sprout everywhere in our garden soil!

    1. Lucky you, Mama Pea, getting rain! You will know, that despite all that snow melting, we need rain here. It gets things going. It is in the forecast today, so hope it materializes. Yes, it seems that we are having an early spring. I have seedlings looking good under lights.

  3. Love those Deer! I can’t imagine a Moose wandering out back! I know the garden is beckoning, and the days of dirty hands are close! We have actually noticed Martin’s in the back field already! They are a coupe of weeks early this year. Have a great week, and I hope you get your rain!

    1. Thank you wyomingheart! Everything here is a couple of weeks early! The moose seem to wander through about this time every spring. Two years ago, one wandered across the drive behind the house, splooshed in and swam across the pond while we watched from the back step. I have pictures!

  4. Hi Rosalea :)) What amazing photos you got!!! I'm so envious that you have deer and moose so close to you. I see deer a lot in the blueberry fields, but they don't come on my property. My garlic is just coming up too, but it's still so cold out there!!!

    1. Hi Rain. If you are gardening, you really don't want the deer to come close!!!
