Sunshine! .... and critters

Finally!! The sun is shining today!

It has been a cool, wet week, with depressingly grey skies. We have had more than 2 1/2 inches of rain over the week, some of it falling in intense showers. This morning there is a heavy dew, and we are waiting for things to dry up so we can get out cutting grass, as we are living in the middle of a hay field!

The garden is growing by leaps and bounds, but we really need some sun and warmth now. Some of my bush beans are showing some rusty leaves from all the moisture.

Recently, on the trail cameras, we've seen a doe who looked pretty skinny, so we were not surprised when finally she has started bringing her fawn around with her. Meet the new member of 'our herd'.

Another denizen of the bush came rumbling through past a trail camera, and gamboling behind her was, what we think is probably her yearling. Thankfully she only gave the camera a passing glance. Bears are notorious for destroying cameras, and we've recently had one torn off a tree, and a big tooth puncture decimated the inner workings.

  1. Hi Rosalea! :) You get some great critter photos on that camera. I love to see bears, but that may be too close for comfort! :) Your garden looks lovely. We had and are still having lots of rain, I hope for sunshine tomorrow!

    1. Hi Rain. You'd never know the bears are around, except maybe in the fall if there is a scarcity of bush food, then our apple trees are in jeopardy! They are hunted in this area, and avoid humans. We had a glorious sunny day yesterday, but more rain is forecast for next week.

  3. Good to know your rain has subsided, at least for a bit. You're living in a middle of a hay field and our grass is turning brown and we're even seeing the soil showing in patches. Ugh. Well, we can't water the grass, but I am keeping the garden going with the sprinkler and hose.

Aren't trail cameras great for seeing all the wildlife around us? I was coming home after an errand earlier this week on a well-traveled road when a black bear ran across the road in front of me. There were two cars coming toward me (on a two-land road) and one behind. I could slow down for the bear with no problem as did everyone else, but I was really scared for a few minutes that there would be a couple of cubs coming behind her. Luckily, there weren't. Phew!

    1. The brown grass was ours early last summer, then August dumped on us! There is certainly nothing one can count on with the weather! The past week was so damp and cold, I was that close to lighting the fire!, and was wrapped up in knitted things to be comfortable for reading and knitting.
Its thrilling to see the wildlife in person, and yes, one has to watch for the young un's coming behind.

  4. Your garden is looking excellent, and so happy that you have had glorious rain ! We have been rather scorched here on the ridge, and have been watering more than usual. I absolutely adore the baby deer videos that we capture here, and the movement of wild critters is amazing to see. We have no idea how close to nature we are, until we see what has been captured on video. Hope you get lots of sunshine this week!

    1. Thank you, wyomingheart. A little too much rain, as my beans are telling me! It seems it is either feast or famine, with the weather! The bear pic was taken off a video, but the yearling bee-bopped past so fast, there were no good frames to capture!

    1. Thanks Jenn...everything is lush with all the rain! Hope we get some good days of sun now, although more rain is also in our forecast this week. It is our fifth summer up here, and each one has been so different!
