"It's a white world after all....."

 January 11, 2026

This morning.

Yep. We got a good snowfall last night, which is still ongoing. It has covered up all the ice that formed yesterday after Friday's excessive rain, followed by a temperature drop that turned the rain-packed snow to ice. The driveway was treacherous, and we had to put cleats on our boots to go out.  Now the ice is nicely covered up.

Good timing, Nellie Belle....

Hubby was doing some fall maintenance on the tractor and discovered metal bits where they shouldn't be in Nellie, so off came the tire to access her rear bits. After serious investigation, some new parts were ordered, and are now being installed. Thankfully he knows an Farm Equipment mechanic!!

The snow blower attachment sits idle.

Before the rain, we had some lovely days, got some  snowshoeing in,

and finally captured a picture of the snow sparkles on a sunny morning. Son and his fancy camera were given a mission to capture the sparkles only. Please 'biggify' this  one, all you snow haters, and see how beautiful the snow is!!!! If the light is right, on a sunny day, all those sparkles are prisms of rainbow colours, like billions of sparkling diamonds, my kind of diamond!

Friday was a lost cause as far as outdoor activities, so I cast on another Ranunculus sweater, a pattern by Midori Hirose.

It is such a fun knit with all the interesting yoke stitches.
Another very nice knit, (but boring after the increases) is the Musselburgh hat by Ysolda Teauge. (Sorry, in Canada..it is a toque!) I've made two, and there are plans for a third. Lots of 'mindless' knitting in it. The hats are double, plus the turned up brim makes them quadruple over one's ears, and they fit so nice and snuggly.
Don't know if it is old age, but I am finding it very difficult to sleep well if there is any amount of light leaking into the bedroom.  Solution....
a sleep mask for which I found a pattern on line. I'd thrifted a pretty silky camisole, so de-constucted it for the fabric. It is the best thing ever. It blocks out every bit of light and feels so nice against your face. Granted, there isn't much light around here at night, but that recent full Wolf Moon shining in the bedroom window was the impetus for this build.

I began this post with snow, so will end it with my paper-pieced snowflake.

  1. It is treacherous out there today. The gas truck got stuck AGAIN. (This is the second time). The ice under the snow made it hard to see where the lane was for the driver. Michael wasn't planning to get the tractor out until it stopped and the plow came by. It was an adventure getting the truck out. We ALL slipped and fell a couple of times.

    1. The snow has covered up the ice, so still dicey walking about.
Was it the propane truck? They always phone to find out road conditions before they venture up this hill.

    2. Yes it was. They don't call ahead here. It is actually driver error. They get too far over on the lane. Mike has put a snowbank there now so they aren't missing the mark. I think we will be cutting a tree or two on the other side of the lane come spring. I would like to straighten out the head of the lane but its such a lot of rigmaroll to get that through council.

  4. That sparkly snow was so pretty. I love snow, sadly we get very little. Take care and have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you Leslie. It is even prettier when the snow and the light is right, and all those sparkles are coloured.

  5. Capturing sparkles on the snow is really difficult, at least in my experience! And my camera always reacted to the bright light by darkening the picture, so you have to do the opposite when editing it.

    1. Son is much more knowledgeable than I about all things photographic! I love those cold, sparkly snow mornings.

  6. And by the way, how did you find a hubby who is a mechanic?

    1. We met in college. He was in Heavy Equipment (a Grease Boy, as we called them then!). He met me by taking a wire off a spark plug on my car, and being conveniently handy to figure out the problem. He will deny this!
